I’ve been called a hustler more than once in my life. The first few times, I considered it an insult.
That’s because when I was growing up, the images I associated with “hustlers” were shysters or pimps wearing flashy clothes, pinky rings, gaudy jewelry, and platform shoes. (Not to mention, Hustler is the name of an adult magazine.)
There are plenty of negative slang definitions of the word hustler.
On the other hand, one of the definitions at dictionary.com is “an enterprising person determined to succeed; a go-getter.” A person who:
- Thinks big
- Learns from what didn’t work
- Refuses to let fear block their evolution
- Looks for ways to continually learn and grow
- Remains willing to try again . . . and again
- Focuses on opportunities instead of obstacles
- Looks for what’s good and collaborates to create win-wins
- Does not waste time whining or complaining
- Never puts a ceiling on their income because they scale what works
- Exchanges value and results for money, instead of exchanging time spent for money
- Consumes high-level, quality content
- Lives in gratitude
